“When Peter Askim asked me to compose a new work for him to premier at the International Bass Conference in Poland in 2004, I was really excited to write something for him and for this instrument that was pretty foreign to me. I had been spending a lot of time in Budapest that year and the gypsy rhythms and frenetic wailings rose out of bars and restaurants across the city of old Pest, infecting my ears with their intoxicating sounds. It is this insanity that drives the piece.”
