Etudes and Improvisations
Starting in 2012, I began to compose etudes that were not only about making the fingers and hands work better, but also about listening and interacting with the space better. At that time, I was thinking about energy moving in space and how naming changes our experience of something, so I named the pieces as well. This has continued to capture my imagination and I write more all the time. I have titled the collection Strange Energies and you can read more about them on my website, www.esandresky.com. A few years into the project it occurred to me that other composers were also thinking about etudes differently, Philip Glass in particular, so I began to pair his pieces with mine, resulting in a solo piano album, Strange Energies, that came out on Orange Mountain Music in April 2020, yeah. Dutch composer, Jobina Tinnemans is another composer that fascinates me. I commissioned her Page-Turner etudes in 2017, the title is literal. The program will include some pieces from the album as well as several premiers alongside the Tinnemans.
I am privileged to share this program with pianist, Augustus Arnone. My set begins at 7pm and his set starts at 8pm.
